Remote testing

Requirements

At least one Identity Verification Assessment or experience per course, where students are required to present photo identification upon beginning the assessment is required of an accredited university. Some courses require proctored exams in order to meet this requirement. Students are required to take all proctored exams.

The University of Nevada, Reno uses Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor as the online proctoring service provider to ensure the academic integrity of online exams. Remote proctoring is only available to students in online classes.

Students must present valid photo identification at the start of the exam. Acceptable photo identification includes a state-issued driver’s license or ID card or passport.

Testing dates and times

  • Unless otherwise stated or adjusted by your instructor, proctored exams are available from 12:00 a.m. Monday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday during their scheduled weeks. • Check your course site for scheduled exam dates/times.
  • Your exam may occur anytime during the scheduled testing dates but must be submitted by the final due date and time.
  • Please contact your instructor for all early or late exam requests.

Testing parameters

Specific testing parameters (e.g. time limits, open or closed book, use of notes, and/or calculators, etc.) for exams can be found in the course site.

Remote testing FAQs

The following are Frequently Asked Questions about remote proctoring only:

  • What can I expect Respondus to be like? The Student Guide to Respondus webpage includes a very helpful video that walks you through exactly what to expect. Please view it before attempting to access your test.
  • Do I have to plan ahead for testing remotely? Yes. You must plan ahead to ensure you have met ALL of the remote testing requirements prior to attempting to take the test. Failure to do so may result in technical difficulties, which may prevent you from taking your exam at all.
  • If I use the remote proctor, how do I know if I completed the check-in tasks and security checks properly? It is your responsibility to complete them to the specifications listed in the proctor handout. Assessment of how well you completed the security checks is left to the instructor.
  • Can I get an extension or retake my exam if I experience technical issues or get disconnected from the exam? Exam extensions must be discussed with the instructor.
  • What do I do if I can’t meet ALL of the requirements for testing with the remote proctoring service? If you cannot meet ALL of the requirements for testing with the remote proctoring service, you should consider testing at the University Testing Center or borrowing a laptop from the University. Please see the library’s Lendable Technology webpage for more information. Please email your instructor if you continue to have concerns.
  • Can I have my phone and other devices near me during the exam? Cellphones and smart devices are NEVER permitted in the testing area. All cellphones, smart devices (including smart watches), and other personal items must be stored away from the testing area.
  • Can I test remotely for a face-to-face class? No. Remote testing is only available to students in online classes.
